Batting first Jersey lost openers Harrison Carlyon (11) and Glamorgan’s Asa Tribe (4) inside the first two-and-a-half overs as the higher-ranked side looked like they would cruise to victory over the islanders.

But Tribe’s brother Zak steadied the innings with a 33-ball 39 that included a six and four fours while Jonty Jenner hit a 13-ball 27.

Charlie Brennan (32 not out) and Ben Ward (18) had a key 37-run stand for the seventh wicket before Ward was caught by Noah Croes off Kyle Klein – one of the Dutch bowler’s three wickets for 42 runs as Jersey ended on 160-7.

In reply Carlyon made an early breakthrough as he bowled opener Michael Levitt for 1 off the fourth ball of the innings.

But Max O’Dowd and Zach Lion-Cachet had what proved to be a crucial 101-run second wicket stand that lasted for 13 overs before Lion-Cachet was caught for 50 off Jersey skipper Charles Perchard’s bowling.

But the hosts never got away from Jersey – who are ranked 12 places below the 15th-placed Netherlands.

O’Dowd went on to make 62 off 47 balls before he was caught on the boundary going for a six to win the game with the final ball of the 19th over.

Scott Edwards guided the Dutch home with 41 not out off 24 balls as they won with three balls to spare.
