    > On Monday evening an anti-immigration protest-turned-march took place from Newry Town Hall through the town. It was led by prominent regional far-right agitators who, aside from peddling disinformation and racism, derided a group of trade unionists and others counter protesting repeatedly with homophobic abuse and labelled them “the real enemy”. These same agitators have egged on and in some cases attended protests that led to brutal pogroms against migrants.

    > This whole event on Monday occurred in response to a proposal from the local council to add Newry to a network of sanctuary cities found across Ireland and Britain. The level of vitriol being generated online in response to this motion was alarming, but to see a protest headed by hatemongering far-right figures spreading bile in Newry is horrifying to many across the community. This is amongst a climate of slowly increasing racist harassment locally which we feel needs to be firmly challenged.

    > In response a growing list of local trade unions alongside progressive and campaigning groups have called a demonstration to cut-through the disinformation, the division and the hate of the far-right. Those understandably concerned about growing inequality or the housing crisis in Newry, should place the blame at those systemically responsible in Westminster and Stormont, not scapegoat vulnerable communities. Newry is a welcoming, friendly place and we stand against racism. This demonstration will take place at Newry Town Hall on Sunday 6th July at 1pm. We encourage all to attend.

  4. How can you unironically blame the government for reckless spending and then in the same sentence complain about cuts in spending? Come on, pick a lane.

    I for one feel the government spends far too much, taxes far too much, and gets involved in our lives far too much. So you had me in the first line of text, lost me by the second.

    Also not sure how you conflate government spending with racism? All in all it’s a very confused message.

  6. Haven’t been in Newry since my school days but it always seemed a friendly town when I was there. Hope that spirit continues and it’s not dragged down by a few troglodytes. Ádh mór oraibh amarach; is aon phobal amháin muid.

  7. Yeah I see the message, don’t blame illegal immigrants for wasting Tax payers money on hotels, free health cover, free cash, free transport and housing it’s actually the sinn fein led government who is stealing our hard earned money. 🍿
