Bank of France Governor Francois Villeroy de Gallo today wore a green cap with the message in English “Make Europe Great Again,” adapting US President Donald Trump’s slogan, during a debate on European sovereignty held in the French city of Aix-en-Provence.
“It’s about putting Europe first, and I’ll even say Europe first. That’s why I’m going to wear something that’s not so governor-like, I warn you in advance,” said Vilroa de Gallo.
The governor then put on a hat, as Trump does at many rallies, wearing a red cap with the slogan “Make America Great Again.”
“I promised to wear a hat, but I don’t promise to keep it because it’s warm, but you’ll see the message,” the French governor added, stating that he borrowed it from a friend.
Fragmented industrial policy, high energy costs, bureaucracy, lagging behind in digital technologies – the European Union is lagging behind the United States (US), whose decision to increase tariffs also affects its economic prospects.
“Trump is obviously something very bad for the global, American and European economy, but it is a wake-up call for us,” the governor of the Bank of France said.
According to him, given what is happening with the new American administration, “a monetary Europe and the possibility of a greater international role for the euro are expected.”
“It will be a gradual diversification. This could be achieved through greater European debt, especially for defense financing, or perhaps through the reorganization of existing debts. No solution is obvious,” said Vilroi de Gallo.
