The European Youth Team Chess Championship 2025 commenced yesterday in Terme Catez, Slovenia!

The Opening ceremony of the event took place shortly before the start of the first round with the attendance of the Deputy Mayor of Brezice Mojca Florjanic, ECU President Zurab Azmaiparashvili, ECU Vice-President Alojzije Jankovic, Vice-President of the Slovenian Chess Federation Mirko Bandelj, Secretary General of the Slovenian Chess Federation Nina Rob, ECU Tournament Director Petr Pisk, and other distinguished guests.

Vice-President of the Slovenian Chess Federation, Mirko Bandelj, delivered the opening remarks, expressing pride that Slovenia is once again hosting a major chess event. Deputy Mayor of Brezice, Mojca Florjanic, also addressed the participants, emphasizing the town’s commitment to supporting sport and youth activities.

The ECU President Zurab Azmaiparashvili highlighted the importance of youth competitions in promoting chess across Europe. He thanked the Slovenian organizers for their efforts and wished all players success on the board.

The Championship features record-breaking participation of 63 teams coming from 18 European federations, with 220 players representing their teams. The event is played in two age categories: U12 and U18, open and girls sections separately.

Most of the first-round rating favourites won their matches yesterday, with only a few upsets in each section. The second round starts today at 15:00 CEST and live games can be followed through the ECU TV platform.
