You can travel to and from Australia for 5 years from the date the visa is granted. After 5 years, to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident you will need a Resident Return (RRV) visa (subclass 155 or 157).

You must be invited to apply for this visa and lodge your visa application within 60 days of invitation. To apply for an Expression of Interest, one needs to be either be in or outside Australia but not in immigration clearance.

When this visa is granted, you need to have an internationally recognized record of exceptional achievement in one of the following areas:

a profession
a sport
the arts
academia and research.

And also have a nominator with a national reputation in your area of talent who is one of the following:

an Australian citizen
an Australian permanent resident
an eligible New Zealand citizen
an Australian organization.

Before you apply, you should find a Nominator who is a person or organization that is willing and able to attest to your achievements. They must be completing a Form 1000 – Nomination for National Innovation visa to be attached to your visa application when you apply.

Then, you have to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) by visiting the Australia Immigration website.

You must include documents to support the claims you make in your application and show you meet the visa criteria. Documents you provide in your visa application must show the achievements claimed in your EOI.

You can then apply for a National Innovation Visa if you have received an invitation to apply.
