Potential 60-day Gaza ceasefire: Trump pushes, Hamas and Israel consider • FRANCE 24 English

Two ceasefires during the nearly 21-monthlong war in Gaza have failed to reach a permanent truce. Now, US President Donald Trump is making his own hard push to stop the conflict. On his truth social media platform Tuesday, Trump said, “Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60-day ceasefire, during which time we will work with all parties to end the war. I hope for the good of the Middle East that Hamas takes this deal because it will not get better. It will only get worse.
Trump did not provide details on what the ceasefire would entail and Israel has not confirmed its agreement. Historically, the main point of contention has been whether the war should end permanently. And indeed, Hamas suggested Wednesday that while it is open to a ceasefire, any deal must end the war. A former adviser to Benjamin Netanyahu says the Israeli prime minister won’t agree to allow Hamas’s survival. Netanyahu said two things at the onset of this war. The hostages have to come back and the kamas has to be banned and thrown out of Gaza. So Netanyahu wants to finish it. He wants to achieve those two things. Until the kamas is defeated, I don’t see him agreeing to a full cessation of war. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sar also emphasized the importance of hostage releases in a deal, writing on X Wednesday that any such opportunity must not be missed. 50 hostages remain in captivity and Israel believes around 20 of them are still alive. Trump and Netanyahu are scheduled to meet at the White House next week and the US president has said he will be quote very firm about ending the war. It’s good.
