Macron urges Ukraine ceasefire in first Putin talks since 2022 • FRANCE 24 English

It was the first phone call between a European leader and Vladimir Putin since November 2024 and the first time since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 that French President Emanuel M had spoken with his Russian counterpart. The 2-hour conversation addressed two key issues, Ukraine and Iran. The Elise called for Russia and Ukraine to commit to a ceasefire and take part in negotiations to achieve a lasting settlement to the conflict. Just this weekend, Kiev reported a record number of Russian drone attacks on its territory. Ukraine then responded on Tuesday with a targeted attack on a Russian factory manufacturing anti-aircraft defense systems. For the French president, the call served as an opportunity to reiterate his total unwavering support for Ukraine. His steadfast position since 2022 when he regularly exchanged phone calls with Vladimir Putin. We want this war to stop. We want to put enough pressure on the Russian president on his system so he stops the war. That’s why I keep talking to him as I did yesterday. But we want to do it through sanctions, through negotiations, through international pressure, but without getting into a conflict and going to war. But for Putin, the war in Ukraine is quote a direct consequence of Western policy and that the end of the conflict must lead to the annexation of the Ukrainian territories under Russian control. However, regarding Iran, the two appeared to be on the same page. According to the Kremlin, Putin repeated Moscow’s call on the international community to respect Iran’s right to develop a peaceful nuclear program. Both leaders say they want to ensure Tran’s compliance with the treaty on the non-prololiferation of nuclear weapons. Above all, the two presidents say they want to keep in touch and repeat this type of call, as was the case before 2022.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to agree a ceasefire in Ukraine “as soon as possible” as the two held their first known phone talks in over two-and-a-half years, the Elysee said. The Kremlin confirmed the conversation but said Putin blamed the West for the conflict and said any peace deal should be “long-term”.

  5. To be honest the Europeans have no credibility in peace talks in Ukraine. They had a peace deal made before the "Minsk 1 & 2 agreements and Ukraine, France and German broke it. The German chancellor Angela Merkel, the French President Hollande and the Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko all stated how clever they were in fooling Russia and boasted that the eight year ceasefire was just time for them to rebuild the Ukrainian army. So why would Russia trust them again especially as they are winning?

  7. Speaking as an American, I have to admit I respect Macron. He's been a good example of maturity and fortitude during an especially wayward time in history. Sending a sub to pop out near Nova Scotia after US threats against Canada's sovereignty and offering to extend France's nuclear umbrella to the rest of Europe after further US perfidy is simply boss as hell. That's power; no asinine chest puffing, whining, or self-adulation necessary.

  8. Putin has no respect for Europe and France paid for the drones Russia used last year. So they are on the same page in both. You keep paying for my drones and we talk Iran.

France has opposed to peace since the begging, the conditions for peace have been defined for more than 10 years and it has been Ukraine and countries like France the ones suggesting that the conflict should continue until Ukraine is in a position of strength which everyone knows is not gonna happen
