America is facing its biggest surge in energy demand in three decades.
But what’s driving this spike in energy usage?
Todd Snitchler, president and CEO of the Electric Power Supply Association, says the key drivers for the increase are data centers and AI.
He also said manufacturing, and the electrification of the economy, including people’s homes, is adding new demand to the system.
When it comes to electric bills, he says the rate increases are related to spending on infrastructure for the transmission and distribution of electricity, not the power you use.
When it comes to trying to save money on your bill, he has some tips:
“You have the ability to participate in what are called demand response programs, which tell you when you should use less power in order to get a discount on your overall bill. And people can take a longer-term look and look at winter weatherization of their homes, so it makes them more efficient int he summer to keep the cold in and the heat out and the reverse in the winter when you want to keep your home warm and keep the cold out,” Snitchler said.
