NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that Russia could carry out military aggression against Estonia, which is a member state of the alliance, in 5-7 years.
He said this in an interview with The New York Times.
In particular, journalists asked Rutte to comment on recent military exercises in Estonia, which were conducted to test its readiness for a possible Russian invasion, noting that the country has neither an Air Force nor a Navy.
In response, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance assured that the exercises were not a warning signal.
“We have all the plans, in case Estonia is attacked — and the Russians know this — our response will be devastating. I can’t go into all the details because Vladimir Putin, I know, watches these programs,” Rutte explained.
He stressed that it was necessary to ensure that there were enough personnel and military equipment.
Therefore, according to the Secretary General, NATO members should spend more on defense. And in the event of a Russian invasion of Estonia, all allies, including the United States, will come to the rescue.
“Putin knows this. That’s why he won’t attack Estonia today. But he might do it in five or seven years if we don’t make all these additional investments,” Rutte added.
Earlier,Estonia began building the Baltic Defense Line in the southeastern part of the country on the border with Russia.
