Luxembourg is set for a historic change of reign this autumn, with a three-day programme marking the accession to the throne of His Royal Highness Grand Duke Guillaume. On Monday, the Maison du Grand-Duc shared the details of the landmark event.
Luxembourg is preparing for a historic royal transition this October as Grand Duke Henri steps down and his son, Grand Duke Guillaume, ascends to the throne. Over three days, the country will mark the occasion with official ceremonies, nationwide celebrations, and a religious service, bringing together citizens from all corners of the Grand Duchy to witness the beginning of a new reign.
On Monday, the Maison du Grand-Duc shared a detailed programme of the ceremonies and events taking place during the Accession to the throne (Trounwiessel).
Friday, 3 October 2025: official ceremonies begin
Grand Duke Henri will formally abdicate at 10am, at the Grand Ducal Palace, followed by the swearing-in of Grand Duke Guillaume at the Chamber of Deputies at 11am.
The Grand Ducal family will appear on the palace balcony at 12.15pm, and will be welcomed at City Hall at 1.10pm.
Afterwards, the new Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie will meet the public at Place Guillaume II at 1.25 pm, before attending a government reception at Cercle Cité at 1.50 pm.
The day will conclude with a gala dinner at the Grand Ducal Palace at 7pm.
Saturday, 4 October 2025 – Nationwide tour
Grand Duke Guillaume will officially begin his reign with a nationwide celebration, paying tribute to the diversity and community spirit of the country. He will visit five symbolic locations: starting in Grevenmacher to meet volunteers and sports advocates; then Wiltz, where he will join a community event featuring a participatory video and music performance; Steinfort, where he will meet healthcare workers and patients; and Dudelange, where he will attend a dance performance highlighting Luxembourg’s social and cultural evolution.
The day’s finale will see the new Grand Duke and Grand Duchess cross the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge in the capital, accompanied by an orchestra and trams in a colourful display.
Festivities will continue on the Glacis square with a drone show and a concert featuring Luxembourg’s musical talent.
Throughout the day, from noon to midnight, public celebrations will also take place in Wiltz, Luxembourg, and Dudelange, each with cultural and entertainment programmes and big screens showing the Grand Duke’s tour.
Sunday, 5 October 2025 – Te Deum
On the final day of celebration, the Grand Ducal Family will attend a Te Deum service at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg City, presided over by Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich. The ceremony will begin at 11 am.
The entire programme will be broadcast live, allowing the public to follow each moment of this landmark royal transition.
