Politicians are retreating from net zero because they think the public doesn’t care. But they’re wrong | Our research shows people are strongly in favour of measures to tackle the climate crisis. They just need to be listened to

Changing this view means showing them; that means calling, writing, turning up in person, talking in private to staff, etc.
What fantastic leadership.
While at the same time:
>Europe’s heatwaves are failing to spur support for climate action
>Voters may feel hotter summers are ‘too much’ but they appear to tolerate roll-back of policies to stop global heating
>Julie does not sound overly alarmed. She worries about climate breakdown for young people, but is not concerned about herself.
>Governments across the rich world continue to roll back policies to stop the planet from heating, while far-right parties that deny climate science lash out at environment rules even as disasters unfold. Their voters, while rarely climate deniers themselves, seem to tolerate their energetic attacks on environmental policy, if not support them.
>“The issue is really that there are so many other concerns now…Now, when we do those polls, climate is near the bottom of the list.”

We’re either all-in on making climate action the #1 priority — every individual, every business, every politician — or we court disaster.
But they don’t care if they are only willing to blame others, not themselves for emissions. Demanding government and corporations sacrifice something but not yourself is removed from real worry. Or you would be afraid to emit any more
People are having babies and booking flights. They are not worried
Of course the public cares! As long as they don’t need to make any personal sacrifices. They want government and industry to Do Something off-stage that will take care of the problem so they can continue leading their lives in exactly the same way they are doing now, but without the intrusions of climate.
