Conservatives love to vote against their own self interest. They will gleefully set themselves up for failure, and when it occurs they blame liberals for not helping them.
The GOP has run texas for many years and this is their greatest accomplishment. 👏
Being cheapskates on thing that could improve or save their citizens lives.
Yet the people still vote for the GOP anyway.
I knew Texas lawmakers hated its citizenry, but I never would have imagined it was this much. At every turn they choose profit over us.
Texas has had disease and massive flooding. Next will be the locusts.
These stories about real time warning systems miss the point entirely. The real flaw was allowing construction and camping on a known flood plain. The warning system should have consisted of permanent signs posted, “No Camping Here.”
Freedom is a helluva drug huh murica?
‘This is not the time’ – Ted Cruz. Give him a time to think of a way to assign the blame.
lessons learned in blood…
literally, *why do we spend money on this stupid alert thing nobody’s died from not being warned in years!*
If individual parents made similar decisions to what the GOP voting block consistently does, it would be considered child neglect.
I feel bad for the children and non-GOP citizens of TX that have to live with these horrible decisions.
Maybe if the alert system was called “Thoughts & Prayers” they would have voted for it.
Let me guess a conservative or GOP county. The members of the GOP consistently and without fail vote against their own interests.
You get what you pay for…
I guarantee they will vote against it again saying something a long the lines of – Well we already had a flood, what are the chances of us having another.
How much is a life worth, Texas? How about 80 lives?
Think of what a 500 million investment could have done to save these lives now and countless others later.
Isn’t this what your taxes should be used for to help the public and keep them safe? No, we have to spend it on school vouchers and installing commandments into public schools, or increasing the ICE military budget.
Sigh.
Ted Cruz: we could send that money to Israel
Somehow, Abbot will find a way to blame Biden for this. It’s the GOP way!!
I heard today that the citizens themselves didn’t like the cost.
I guess Republicans figured people can just make more babies to replace the drowned children.
Sirens are socialist
Republican Utopia! Thin the herd.
Republicans hurt themselves in confusion
Maybe next time some conservative gets saved from a disaster they could thank democrats and the government instead of god?
Oh, no, god does the saving but none of the killing and democrats do the killing and none of the saving.
Dumb fucks believing in wizardry
Average Texan (probably):
>Yeah, over a hundred people died, but it wasn’t my family members. And I got to keep an extra $5 every year because my taxes weren’t raised to pay for some stupid noise-making devices.
This flooding is horrible and I feel for the victims.
But they’ve had multiple opportunities to do something to mitigate the risk and increase the chances for people to be notified and get to safety, and each time they pulled the “it costs too much” card.
Which uncovers the sad truth of what the residents of the area value. They want all the benefits of civilization but don’t want to make even the smallest sacrifice to make improvements if the perception is that they won’t personally benefit or have a use for the proposed solution. They inhabit a community but see themselves as rugged individualists who have no role in contributing to the common good.
It’s not unreasonable to comment that it seems that a lot of the rest of the country who don’t identify with those values is simply fatigued of being expected to constantly draw up empathy for people who repeatedly choose to do nothing to improve things yet want all the assistance in the world when something happens.
It’s like having an addicted family member who expects you to bail them out over and over while they do nothing to improve their condition. At some point the empathy well runs dry and people stop caring. That’s not an abnormal response like some seem to think.
Dumbass GOP people will literally build in a riverbed and then refuse to install a flood siren. It would be funny if not so tragic to see the loss of innocent lives.
There was a quote in the NYT today from a Kansas farmer who is getting fucked by Trump, “changing your vote is like changing your religion.”
No shit dumbass. You need to get both out of your life, esp. since your religion is all lip service.
A bunch of kids died needlessly, but hey, they saved $3.50 on their annual taxes, so that’s money in their pocket!
“Kerr County, located in a flood-prone region of the Texas Hill Country, has previously dismissed proposals for siren-based warning systems, citing financial burden on local taxpayers.
A recent effort at the state level to bolster emergency communication infrastructure, House Bill 13, failed in the Texas Senate earlier this year.”
Well hope you’re happy with emotional burdens vs financial ones
I was reading responses on a post yesterday that neighboring counties were getting alerts.
Glad the truth is coming out.
>Gov. Greg Abbott acknowledged the potential value of better alert systems and said future legislation could address the issue, though he declined to commit to including it in the special session beginning July 21.
Despite literal flood happening, they still refuse to consider adding the system.
