WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump criticized his former ally, Elon Musk, for launching a third political party, calling it “ridiculous” and saying the tech billionaire has gone “off the rails.”

Musk, the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), announced over the weekend that he was forming the “America Party” after posting a poll on X.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” he wrote on the social media platform. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Trump responded on Truth Social on Sunday, saying he was “saddened to watch Elon Musk go ‘completely off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks.”

Earlier in the day, the president told reporters it is “ridiculous” to start a third party and that there is already “tremendous success with the Republican Party.”

“The Democrats have lost their way, but it’s always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to confusion,” he continued. “It really seems to have been developed for two parties. Third parties have never worked.”

The feud between Musk and Trump began after the Tesla CEO expressed his concerns over the “pork-filled Congressional spending bill” increasing the country’s deficit, claiming the “Big, Beautiful Bill” would “defeat all the cost savings achieved” by DOGE.

The barbs continued for several days on social media before it briefly died down with Musk deleting some of his earlier posts.
