Steinmeier is no stranger to the country, having paid numerous visits during his lengthy stint as Germany’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, first in 2005-9 and then again 2013-17. He has been German President since 2017.

The Federal President hopes to use this visit to highlight Germany’s special connection and historical and cultural ties with the two Baltic states, as well as their cooperation on security policy, according to information published on his official website.

“In Latvia, the Federal President will hold political talks with President Rinkēvičs and Prime Minister Siliņa on 8 July. He will join his Latvian counterpart on a visit to a German Navy ship [the corvette Braunschweig] that is supporting the NATO operation Baltic Sentry in the Baltic Sea.”

President Steinmeier is accompanied on the trip by his partner, Elke Büdenbende, and comes straight from a visit to Lithuania. He is due to leave Rīga around 13:00 on Tuesday.
