Fair play to author Derek Landy for being a legand. Waited 5 hours to get my kids book signed and he gave every single person as much time as he could.

  1. He’s a legend. Lives near me, and attended the same secondary school I did when I was in junior cycle.

He did our end of year awards one year, and I’ll never forget how funny he was. He asked the hall “I was a weird kid, how many of you consider yourselves the weird kid?” or something like that. Only three people put up their hands. He went into his bag and gave them all a Nintendo DS. Class act.

  2. I used to be big into the books and went to a signing for each book.

Every single time, he never cut it short. Stayed and talked with every single fan. No limit on the amount of books he’d sign either.

  3. Wonderful books- my son , now a young adult, loved them…. I loved to read them to him, as the books were smart, sassy & witty.

  4. I only discovered him recently through his comic work for Marvel. When I looked him up I was pleasantly surprised. Seems like a good lad.

  5. I’ve recently started reading (m30). Pathetic I know, but I’m trying. I googled 100 books you must read before you die. Think I’ve 12/13 done.

I like to get em in paper tho. I remember picking up the first 3 in the bookstore and the girl behind the counter gave me a little smile like she knew I was in for a treat.

Would love to start reading some Irish authors. What’s his best book?

  6. I picked up the first Skulduggery book on a whim all the way back when it came out while on holiday in Ballybunion. Absolutely adored it. I haven’t read a lot of the sequel series but I’m glad Landy seems to be an alright fella.

  7. I got my copy of Kingdom of the Wicked signed at its launch in Hodges Figgis back in 2014ish and having waited for him to show up and then waiting for all the line ahead of us, I figured I’d speed it up for him by giving him my name as I handed it to him. He made some joke and witty remark about it and talked to me and my friends for a minute and it was great.

Finished reading up to Dying of the Light and haven’t read through the second series but that first set I read through so much. Was one of the first things I talked to my friends about in secondary.

  8. That guys a fucken champ. His books were what got me into reading nearly 15 years ago. Cant wait for him to come to aus again sometime so i can finaly meet him

  9. I went to one of his signings on dublin culture night years ago. He stayed there long past the listed time to make sure he got to everyone in the long queue and he was still lively and engaged despite the time! Was a pleasure to meet him

  10. I liked this dude until the whole drama went down in his fandom with him and his girlfriend. Apparently she was a SP super fan and they met at a signing when she was 17. They emailed back and forward after that and apparently only started dating when she was 18/19 but honestly it creeps me out. My sister was super into those books and was just a small bit younger than that girl… and this dude was 20 years older than them both. Anyways, they’re still together I believe.

  11. When I was a kid going to school in Blanchardstown, all of us got to go to a meet the author day with him, near the LeisurePlex. I’d been reading the books already so was properly excited.

The guy was very nice, took time to sign our books at the end. I remember him talking about some Zombie film he’d wrote that starred Samantha Mumba. Also, probably the first successful person I’d ever heard speak who was into ‘nerdy’ stuff.

This was probably 15 years ago now but I still remember it, and probably have that signed book somewhere!
