Trump pulls plug on UK research into air pollution and global warming

  1. UK-based climate scientists have had research projects cancelled and lost access to crucial data as a result of Donald Trump’s sweeping funding cuts.

US institutions such as Nasa and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which play a similar role to the Met Office, are having billions cut from their budget by the US President.

The Trump administration has also cancelled billions of dollars worth of research grants, including funding for climate research at US universities.

The i Paper has spoken to researchers based at universities across the UK who say they have been impacted by the loss of US collaborators and access to vital data sources.

Laura Wilcox, a professor at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) in the University of Reading, has lost access to a dataset called AirNow, which records pollution in cities across the world using sensors on the top of over 80 US embassies and consulates.

The data, which has been published for over 15 years, was taken offline in March, with the US state department citing “budget constraints”.

  2. The old “if we don’t measure it it’s not happening” approach. Brilliant.

  3. History is not going to look back kindly upon this orange buffoon.

The whole world is going to know him for generations as someone that needlessly kneecapped progress in pursuit of his own demented greed.

  4. It’s like they know something we don’t ( oh hold on its already to late ) /s

  5. I will never not be angry at this rapist shit stain and his dumb fuck supporters.

  6. When is the UK going to realise that Trump and the States in general are not our friends, and yet we bend over for them at every turn.

  7. I cant be remembered poorly if there’s no future generations to remember me, or if there are then I hope the cave paintings get the right shade of orange shit.

  8. The same Trump that is golfing whilst the search goes on for victims of another extreme weather event in the country? Wonder why there are so many of them currently? Guess we’ll never know if we don’t research it!!

  9. Pathetic. Watching western powers cripple themselves in an attempt to appease the avarice of their corporate masters.

Corporate masters shitting themselves in ivory towers, petrified of change, spending billions on media propaganda, instead of research that could put them at the front of the technological changes needed.

    Pathetic.

  10. Why does the orange prick have any say about what the UK does?

  11. It’s not, we had shared access to data they collected.

  12. At this point surely international governments should be declaring an idiot is running the asylum. Diplomacy is one thing but blatant ignoral of incompetence and illegal activity is sickening.

  13. Anecdotally, I work in a university research group focussed on net zero technologies. Before Trump won, a number of us were invited to submit articles in a special issue for a US-based journal. We submitted our papers a few months after he assumed office, but not a single one of the several papers submitted were accepted. Part of me wonders if Trump’s climate skepticism and scientific censorship agenda played a part in this.

  14. I cannot wait until trump fucks off. I just feel sorry for the next person that has to undo all this shit.

  15. Nobel Prize nominee Trump does yet another thing based on profit at the expense of the world

  16. No need to focus on problems. Lets just build an alligator alcatraz.

  17. thank god we left the EU, and returned to 100% sovereignty. Now we are truly the masters of our own fate…

right? that is what this article is about right?

  18. This is a good article but it misses some really important context.. What Trump’s doing isn’t just cutting a research partnership .. it’s part of a broader pattern of dismantling environmental protections and gutting climate science in the US.. One big gap here is methane .. which is about 80 times more powerful than CO₂ over 20 years.. Fracking and drilling in the US leak huge amounts of methane, and Trump rolled back nearly every rule meant to contain it.. That directly affects both climate and air quality, since methane fuels dangerous ozone pollution..

Also missing is the damage from shutting down tools like NASA’s Carbon Monitoring System — which gave the world independent data on emissions.. When the US walks away from science and regulation like this, it doesn’t just affect Americans it weakens climate action and air quality work globally..

So yes, the UK losing a research partner matters .. but the real issue is deliberate sabotage of climate and air science on a much bigger scale..

  19. There are various research cohorts into health which have been going for decades which have just stopped in the US.

Various projects were kyboshed because they had words Trump et al thought were too woke eg diversity, bias etc. But often those words can have totally different scientific meanings, eg genetics.

They don’t care if your study was investigating the role of genetic diversity on Alzheimer’s disease risk; you have been infected by the woke mind virus.

Non US researchers can use some US health research cohorts like All Of Us, and there is a sense that’s all on very much borrowed time before Trump stops that access.

  20. I genuinely believe this cunt is one of the worst people that has been alive in my lifetime.

Yes there have been others that have done worse things to human beings but the damage this fucker has done will be felt for years after he’s gone.

And that day can’t come soon enough.

  21. Jeez. Firstly what the f#ck has Trump got to do with UK research? Then why is UK one of only 3 countries on this planet to do a ‘deal’ with Trump.

I lived in UK for 20 years and moved back to Ireland after Brexit.  Absolutely despised Tories and their policies.  Beginning to lose faith in Starmer now having genuinely believed he could be good for UK government.

Would not be surprised if that disgusting tramp Farage and his Reform Party get into government soon, possibly as part of coalition…..

What a crap world we live in at this time.

  22. Trump doesn’t have control over what the UK does. If the country wants it they can still do it.

If he pulls funding and you don’t want to pay for it guess what? It doesn’t matter to you as much as you are claiming.

  23. Thirds parties are getting way too rich over climate change funds and restrictions.

  24. Trump won’t be happy until there’s CFCs back in aerosols, lead back petrol, and asbestos back in school walls.

  25. UK should fund their own research instead of relying on our American tax dollars to fund it.
