Kate Middleton’s latest look features a fascinating tie to her wedding dress—and Meghan Markle’s. On Tuesday, the Princess of Wales stepped out at Buckingham Palace wearing a caped Givenchy gown designed by the label’s newest creative director, Sarah Burton.

Burton, who took the helm at Givenchy last fall, was previously with Alexander McQueen. After interning at the brand, Burton succeeded the British designer following his passing in 2010 and remained at McQueen until September 2023.

It was Burton who dreamed up Kate’s 2011 wedding gown, which included handmade Carrickmacross lace and a nine-foot-long train.

Funnily enough, Givenchy also crafted her sister-in-law Markle’s wedding dress, though this was during creative director Clare Waight Keller’s tenure.

Kate and her husband, Prince William, attended a banquet held on behalf of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte. The Princess of Wales accessorized with one of her favorite tiaras, the Queen Mary Lovers’ Knot, which was frequently favored by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Middleton also wore a pair of ornate chandelier earrings from Queen Elizabeth’s collection. She finished off the look with a pearl bracelet, a red clutch, and her blue sash symbolizing her rank as the Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

At the Order of the Garter service last month, Kate’s outfit had another connection to her sister-in-law, that time with her choice of handbag.

For the festivities, Kate rewore one of her favorite Self-Portrait dresses, which she was previously spotted in at a VE Day concert earlier this year. She paired the frock with a Sean Barrett hat and a Strathberry clutch that drew a striking resemblance to one of Meghan’s popular pieces.

The Princess’s Multrees Chain Wallet ($425) coordinated with her look’s ivory hue and featured the brand’s signature Music Bar. Meghan carried a dark green crossbody with similar hardware back in 2018, and in 2017—not long after her engagement to Prince Harry—she touted Strathberry’s Tri Color Midi Tote, causing it to sell out within minutes.
