“A statement issued later on Tuesday from KT, the Local Government and County Employers organisation called the move “completely irresponsible.”
Jalonen claimed that nursing groups have refused to provide enough staff to ensure patient safety.”
Lack of staff has been an issue for years. They have not cared before the strike when our units have been understaffed and endangered patient’s safety on a regular often on a daily basis. This problem has been known and nothing has been done to improve the situation. And now instead of improving pay or working conditions they are preparing a law that would affectively force nurses to work or get fined.
Did the hospitals try a pizza party?
My professors discussed this in a lecture about nursing, and essentially their view on it was that there are two main issues.
A: There is a lack of nurses, which forces them to work harder and faster. Less time is spent on each patient and certain core elements of nursing can’t be done.
B: Nurses have more tasks to do now than before. As an example: an integral part of patient safety is documentation, which at least here in Sweden, is the nurses job. This isn’t something that only nurses can do, which really makes you wonder why we’re overloading them with work that others can do.
