MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Students from rural high schools across Wisconsin were able to access science education and experiments at the UW-Madison Summer Science Camp on Tuesday.
This summer, students and teachers from 13 school districts across the state will take part in science classes and experiments, taught by volunteer scientists and researchers from the UW-Madison Morgridge Institute for Research.
“We all in small towns, as teachers, do our best with whatever resources we’re given, but a lot of times we have time constraints and can’t set up incredible lab opportunities like this,” said Cristina Wolfe, a science teacher at Darlington High School. “We don’t have the materials and the equipment, so we’re so excited to be able to bring students here.”

The Summer Science Camp has been running for 19 years, and its goal, to get students from rural communities interested in science and pursuing higher education, has been a success.
We have people who have earned their PhD here at UW-Madison who were part of this camp when they were high schoolers, so it’s really exciting to see them do this and then go on into a science career,” said Dr. Wes Marner, director of the Summer Science Camp.
Students also get a taste of what life on campus is like. They stay in the university dorms during the week-long camp and have several opportunities to explore the city.
“We saw the other students walking around, and I think they were able to imagine a little bit what it might be like to be in college,” said Wolfe.
There are three sessions of the week-long camp this summer.
