   Privatizing weather agencies has long been an aim of Republicans. During Trump’s first presidency, he signed a bill that utilized more private weather data. And Project 2025, a proposed blueprint for Trump’s second presidency that was co-authored by his budget director, calls for the NOAA to be broken up and for the weather service to “fully commercialize its forecasting operations.”

3. Yeah, no shit. They’re guttting every public institution they can privatize. It’s literally in their playbook (Project 2025 by The Heritage Foundation) very few people, and apparently no one in the media bothered to read.

8. I would highly recommend anyone read The 5th Risk by Michael Lewis. The section on the NWS and NOAA is a fascinating dive into the importance of these publicly funded essential services. Also a fascinating dive into attempts by Trump and his cabinet and other conservative influences to put a paywall between that data and the consumer. Because why should we all have access to this great and helpful data when we could simply give it to Accuweather and have them sell it to us?
