  3. Interesting. Of course, Azerbaijan is miles away from being a democracy. But the West could provide some political/economic support here. A “second front” behind Russia could support peace in Ukraine.

  4. Aliyev’s not a good guy but this is a good decision for Ukraine and another sign that Russia’s grip over the former USSR is weakening.

  6. Wasn’t Azerbaijan always more aligned with Turkey? When Azerbaijan fought with Armenia, it was Armenia who was screwed over by Russia’s alliance, not Azerbaijan. So this isn’t really news.

    Is this likely an act of pragmatisam rather than genuine altruism? I expect so, but I’m not going to be upset over it and it makes putin look weak so overall it’s a win

    It has never been about “dirt “ Russia has plenty of dirt, it has always been about Russia projecting its power outside of Russia.

    When the Russian satellite countries start acting independently that will signal the end of Putin’s Russia. And it’s threats to Europe Africa and the wider world.

    The shattering of the Russian “federation” all autocratic dictatorships held as satelite states under threat of disposal or occupation…

    Back when the USA had competent geostrategic acumen it was a major concern as well…these countries do NOT like each other and without the support of the Kremlin they all run the high risk of either fighting amongst themselves or just self-destructing. The entire region could go up in flames and it’s a BIG region, Afghanistan ain’t got shit on how fucked up it would get.

    I’m not sure I agree in that analysis but the way things are going the USA may not give a damn now either.

    It’s ironic that the Russians are the single greatest factor in having the current us administration in power, and yes it’s crippled the USA and the west in general on a global strategic and economic level, very successful operation….but now they have THE most unpredictable destructive and powerful man just…rampaging. and that’s gonna harm them MORE eventually.

  20. This is just another step but an important one. If Putin wasn’t murdering and abducting in Ukraine, he’d be in Azerbaijan right now doing the same there I’m sure.
