It’s been half a century, the Cyprus problem in the eyes of the International Community is a frozen conflict. The Cyprus problem outlived most of the Secretary Generals of the UN. Who knows how many more we will bury. Many in the international community don’t even believe we want a solution. Most people in Cyprus have also lost hope that solution is something possible or that refugees will ever go back to their homes. A few days ago when I posted that Anastasiades wasn’t going to attend the EU conference he said that it’s better that way. If he went he would just talk about Cyprus instead of Ukraine. I see why.
You talk about sanctions to Turkey. You are right, Turkey didn’t get really sanctioned when Cyprus asked for them when it started drilling in Cyprus EEZ or when they opened Varosha (imo that’s more serious). If you are talking about the sanctions for the occupation, well ofc there will be no sanctions for that. There were some sanctions including and arms embargo in 1974. Do you think the sanctions to Russia about Ukraine will be the same in ~~1970~~ 2070? The EU didn’t want a divided island, they wanted a united Cyprus in the EU and that’s why they supported the Annan plan. In fact all the International Community (including EU, UN, the three guarantors) supported the Annan plan except GCs and Denktash. And I get why both of them didn’t accept it, it was a bad solution plan for GCs and it wasn’t a partition plan for Denktash, thats okay, but the EU accepted Cyprus under the status quo without a promise to change it other than supporting future negotations between Cypriots.
Do you really expect(or believe anyone should) that anyone today would focus on Cyprus instead of Ukraine? People are dying there today, Putin says the state of Ukraine will cease to exist today.
