Aleix Espargaró officially kicked off his professional cycling journey today on Stage 1 of the Tour of Austria
A little over a week ago, the Spaniard competed in the Dutch MotoGP with Honda , a team in which this year he works as a test driver. Today, Aleix swapped his motorbike for his Trek Madone Gen 8 and lined up for 167km around the roads of Steyr. After a career spanning two decades in MotoGP, Aleix says “I’m more nervous now than when I debuted in MotoGP. Much more. To MotoGP, I arrived after a logical process, going through Moto 3 and Moto 2. Now, I arrive here without having even made a career as an amateur”.
Aleix had one request before going into this race – he wanted to be just one of the guys. No special treatment, no illusions for stage victories, no ego and not as a protected rider. Aleix is here to help his teammates and to be the best domestique possible. He wasted no time today, getting stuck in with positioning the guys in the crucial moments, getting bidons and helping our GC man, Lennard Kamna, when he needed. Aleix crossed the line in the main bunch with tired legs but a smile on his face.
Aleix – ” Survived day one! What tension, the speed.. insane. I suffered but I’m enjoying every bit with this amazing team”.
We go into this race with high hopes for the general classification with Lennard Kamna and also eyes on the young rider jersey with our young Devo rider, Hector Alvarez. A tough final saw both Lenny and Hector hang on over the top of the final climb and cross the line in 6th & 7th position respectively, +16 seconds down on stage winner, Grosschartner of UAE Emirates XRG. Alvarez sits 2nd in the best young rider classification on the same time as Grosschartner’s teammate, Del Toro.
Hector after today’s stage..
The finish of tomorrow suits me to possibly take the white jersey but with Del Toro, it will be difficult but I’ll definitely fight for it. It was super close on the line today for the jersey which shows me that I can do it.
