Scotland is independent in the DC Universe. I was watching the 1987 Superman IV film and noticed this when Superman was giving his speech to the United Nations.

It’s an American film. Britain and England are usually seen as interchangable and meaning the same thing.
To prove your point, maybe you could include a still that shows Scotland is listed as separate?
For another example, the X-Com series developers made Scotland it’s own country in X-Com: Enemy Unkown as they were so confident Scotland would vote for independence in 2014
I like this!
But on the other hand, a lot of the non-US superheroes or supervillains are heavily stereotyped to the point of caricature.
Swings and roundabouts I suppose lol
lol. losers.
Doubtful. Most countries refer to Britain as England. Angleterre, Igirisu etc.
And Star Trek.said there would be a united Ireland in 2025
That’s the most positive and least likely assumption.
The more realistic one is the set designer just assumed UK = England.
Lets be honest, its more that Americans don’t understand what the UK is.
There are enough wacky supervillians in DC comics that I would not be 100% confident Scotland still exists in that universe.
Or, Scotland was destroyed? Perhaps by a lake-dwelling ancient kaiju that wasn’t half as cute as on the biscuit tin.
I read it as England has absorbed or conquered the other nations. I’m a glass half empty guy.
Watch the West Wing. The cast refer to England one moment; then the British ambassador next.
It’s an American thing. Same kind of mentality shown by the puppets in Team America.
Or maybe Scotland is now fully annexed by England.
I hate to say that most foreign countries can not tell the difference between England, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom.
They probably had the name wrong rather than recognise Scotland as independent…
That guy from earlier will be furiously masturbating over this post
It was filmed in England. They used Milton Keynes as a low budget alternative to the United Nations!
Perhaps England is independent and Edinburgh is the capital city of the United Kingdom of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Wales is independent in the MCU. Check the scene at the end of Black Panther at the U.N.
Seems more likely it’s due to typical American ignorance. ‘The Queen of England’ sort of thing
in the MCU wales in indy! these comic films know whats up!
The comments under here trying make it out as if England can’t also be referenced or shown as independent, are coming across as if the UK just has to exist even in fiction, which is weird.
Also, the idea that the people behind the production (producers, writers) could have only made a mistake or misunderstood when deciding on showing England as independent is kind of laughable to me.
Also New York looks like Milton Keynes with a smattering of red fire hydrants.
It makes perfect sense, superhero films have some very fantastical and far-fetched plots. The SNP’s prospectus for independence was about as realistic as the plot of Superman.
Plot twist: Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland form the UK while England is independent
More to do with clueless USAians not knowing the difference between England, GB, and the UK.
I’m loving that this seems to trigger some people!
The thought that Scotland might be independent even in a fictional universe seems to have annoyed a few folk!
