Of course they should refuse. I don’t want someone driving a huge machine, struggling to think straight or on the verge of falling asleep because it’s grossly hot. It’s madness we don’t have maximum working temperature laws like we do minimums.
Those in charge might do something serious about climate change if we did.
I’m sorry, I’m too sexy to drive this bus.
I had temps of 45c in the cab of a Sainsburys delivery van. Managers gave zero shits. Yes those home delivery guys don’t have air con.
Genuine question. Don’t most buses, if not all, have AC these days? Maybe we’re just lucky in Ealing!
It’s in everyone’s interest – if the driver passes out due to the heat and passengers get hurt, then …?
Yeah, it’s the employer’s responsibility to provide safe and comfortable working conditions. My company doesn’t force me to work standing up, and if they did I would refuse. If the office wasn’t air conditioned/kept at a reasonable temperature, I would simply refuse to work in the office and work from home instead. Bus drivers can’t work from home, so it’s perfectly reasonable to refuse to be in a physically demanding environment when the job doesn’t necessitate it.
I thought they had aircon on these things?
Really – yes it is unseasonably warm for summer here in the UK but services still need to be operated. Harden up.
All future buses should have AC tbh.
I’m perfectly happy with this, so long as it is made clear when a service is cancelled, sometimes this is obvious with live displays but quite often it is not. You don’t want someone being affected by heatstroke waiting for a bus that never was going to arrive
Oh its got.. time for the media to completely twist common sense to make people seem unreasonable.
We need standards accross the board for it being too hot or too cold to work and go to school in the UK.
Whoever benefits from the driver cab not being cool enough should stop benefitting.
Pathetic on so many levels.
Busses should be air conditioned. Brits need to get used to the heat we get in summer for a few days and have had for the last 15 summers. It’s not that bad.
All PR. In the real world when drivers refuse the bus companies threaten the sack and TfL seemingly couldn’t give two hoots or is blissfully unaware. I don’t have much hope the unions will do anything either – they’ve been completely useless with pay despite multiple walkouts. The bus industry is just far too fragmented.
Seems reasonable. I want the person driving the vehicle I’m in to be comfortable and not on the verge of passing out.
Buses desperately need to be upgraded with solid air conditioning.
Good! This should be the cases with most work. Provide safe and comfortable conditions in the heat or it’s a no.
It would be in TfL’s interest to get air con on the buses as the drivers wanna strike over more money than I make in a week !
You just know this story was made as rage bait, but I’m glad most of us have brains and see that bus drivers are absolutely right to refuse to drive if it’s too hot. Their cabs should have AC that keeps them as cool as they want.
I think it should be mandatory that lorries and buses have functioning AC. I’m a hgv driver and firms don’t give a damn if the AC isn’t working. It should be on the daily vehicle check.
