“Irish deputy PM says UK triggering article 16 would precipitate collapse in relations with EU”
“I don’t think anybody wants to see the European Union suspending the trade and cooperation agreement with Britain,” he said. “But if Britain were to act in such a way that it was resigning from the protocol resigning from the withdrawal agreement, I think the European Union would have no option other than to introduce what we call rebalancing measures to respond.”
Wonder how the EU would justify withdrawing from the TCA as an appropriate rebalancing measure in response to an article 16 invoking of the WA. This is noting the scope of what can be done with article 16.
What are these plans? Collapsing the whole deal because the UK uses Article 16 seems a bit extreme and will inflict damage all around particularly in the Irish republic.
At this point the EU is negotiating in bad faith. Pulling the plug because the UK uses an article in a trade agreement after pulling the same plug the EU pulled without consultation 28 days into the agreement.
Edit – downvote the truth guys.
As long as they don’t start blowing up children again.
>if Britain were to act in such a way that it was **resigning** from the protocol
Not the correct word to use. But interesting to see how the EU will spin using the article they already tried to use
Or they could, you know, use the in built dispute mechanism.
it sounds like disproportionate retribution as triggering the dispute mechanism doesn’t feel like a good reason for the EU to kill the TCA
