  1. Emmanuel Macron will relaunch the French nuclear program. The President of the Republic announced during his address to the French on Tuesday the construction of new EPR-type nuclear reactors in the coming years. The Head of State had already announced in mid-October investments of one billion euros in small nuclear reactors (SMR).

“If we want to pay for our energy at reasonable prices, we need carbon-free energy,” said the President of the Republic, who ensures that he is taking this decision to guarantee carbon neutrality in 2050. “These investments will allow us to be in the spotlight up to our commitments when the COP26 in Glasgow closes ”, he added.

This announcement follows the report by the RTE electricity grid operator, published two weeks earlier, which recommended the construction of EPR-type reactors in order to ensure the country’s energy transition.

  2. SMR’s are the way to go. We have one operational in Russia already that’s providing electricity to the far east and are working on building a couple more.

  3. This is complete posturing for his campaign has he wont be the one that will validate such a huge project.

Also, I’m looking forward the endless demonstrations against the construction by locals. I will also remind that macron promised to reduce the share of nuclear in our energy mix. Another failure to his account.

  4. Marcon isn’t my cup of tea but this is very good. To realistically confront climate change nuclear must be part of the solution.

  5. would be cool if the uk and france could work together on this like with concorde, but i dont see that happening. Maybe later on in the projects

great we’re both doing this though

  6. The world would be far better off if France invested that money into their lagging renewable capacity, instead of blowing it on the nuclear industry and their blatant marketing lies of “sustainability” and being “green”. This move doesn’t help the necessary changes, it sabotages them. What a coincidence that both countries leading this movement in Europe are also the ones that insist on retaining nuclear weapons of mass destruction.

  7. Interesting. I’ve all for a diversified European energy system (not that France needs more nuclear, but still) so this is welcome in a region that is currently building almost exclusively wind and solar power. That said, after the economic disasters [Olkiluoto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olkiluoto_Nuclear_Power_Plant) and [Flamanville](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamanville_Nuclear_Power_Plant) (13 and 11 years behind construction schedule – and counting), this is probably the last chance the EPR reactors will get to deliver on their original promise that they are safe and can be built at a reasonable cost in the western world (i.e. can be constructed in 4-5 years without massive delays).

  8. Well if Politico is right Macron wants to ban English

Yeah any business would probably point out how terrible of an idea that is as English is very easy language to use

  9. With two of Europe’s three largest economies going heavy into nuclear, this can only bode well for reducing emissions. Here’s hoping Germany follows suit for the trio.

  10. Germany : we can’t go nuclear, it’s bad !

    France : I’M NUCLEAR !!!! I’M WILD !!!
