Ireland rejects EU states’ call to join NATO – ‘It would backfire tremendously’ | World | News

  1. Northern Ireland is already in Nato. Republic expects the UK and US to protect them while they don’t pay their fair share. This will backfire eventually.

  2. Ireland joining NATO would just be pointless posturing. Try sell it to the country while telling them we would be expected to spend €8.3 billion(2%gdp) per year on defense.

  3. Fuck that they only good thing to come out of the Irish military is the ARW. And even at that their numbers are very little. But, our special forces are apparently one of the best in the world…

  4. In the current situation would anybody defend us if Russia attacked, or would we be left alone like Ukraine?

Imagine if the Brits defended us. They probably would as they wouldn’t want Russia so close to them. Mass suicide on r/Ireland.

  5. No we don’t need to be joining NATO. We need closer military links with the EU though on a defensive only footing. Similar to how we have handled the Ukrainian invasion.

    -We will send supplies,
-Be available as peace keepers when the time comes.
    – Fulfill our duties as EU members on funding.
-Be there to help people fleeing the war.

  6. We should join NATO. No concrete reason not to, only angry tankies and anti-anti types would be against.

    1. Improve our 19th century style armed forces.
    2. Defense industry jobs.
    3. We are on the Atlantic seaboard, open to Russian naval attacks. We would undoubtedly be used as a beachhead into Europe in a war scenario. We are the weak link there.

  7. It’s astounding that questions are even being asked about our neutrality policy, it shows just how badly the Russians and their allies abroad have miscalculated. It’s hard to be “neutral” when you see what is happening to the Ukrainian people. I don’t see any dramatic changes in Irish policy in the years to come, but I can see us taking a much more active role in discussions about how we can contribute to the defense of our shared interests in a free and democratic Europe.

Now. about those Javelins we have in storage which are about to expire……

  8. We can either spend €8.3bn bringing our army up to NATO numbers, or give that money to Ukraine so they can buy 4,000 Bayraktars. In terms of things which will deter Russia, I think I can see which option is better lol.

And yes I know it doesn’t work like that, but still
