King Charles is making Buckingham Palace a more colorful place.
The British monarch, 76, has quietly axed a dress code rule at the royal residence in London, according to The Times. While players were previously required to wear all white on the private courts at Buckingham Palace, King Charles has reportedly eased the restriction. Now, tennis whites are “preferred” but “not essential” for members of the royal family, household staff and guests who use the palace courts.
According to the report, the King wanted staff and guests to feel less restricted by protocol while playing the sport.

The Buckingham Palace tennis court was constructed in 1919 during the reign of King George V. While King Charles isn’t a huge fan of the sport, King George VI was known for playing, including challenging three-time Wimbledon champion Fred Perry on the palace grounds in the 1930s.
In 2000, the courts hosted a charity match benefitting the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children Full Stop Campaign. John McEnroe and Björn Borg faced off, and Anna Kournikova also competed at the event — with Claudia Schiffer watching!

It’s possible that Kate Middleton has hit the Buckingham Palace courts. The Princess of Wales, 43, is known to be a big fan of the sport and has a court at her country home with Prince William, Anmer Hall.
Princess Kate is also the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, making her a regular attendee of Wimbledon, which continues to enforce its all-white dress code. However, even the prestigious tennis tournament has relaxed its rules slightly. A new amendment introduced in 2022 dictated that women can “wear solid, mid/dark-colored undershorts provided they are no longer than their shorts or skirt.”
Since acceding to the throne in 2022, King Charles has made other changes to Buckingham Palace’s recreational features. In 2023, he made headlines after he had the heated swimming pool’s temperature lowered. The reason? To save on energy costs.
