Residents evacuated as forest fire blazes in southern France • FRANCE 24 English

More than 1,000 firefighters were on night watch in the southern French town of Narbon. Unusually intense fires here have destroyed more than 1,500 hectares of land and the blaze is still not under control. It’s a very big fire. We already saw a blaze of a similar surface area many many years ago. It’s spreading wide. And as the blaze surrounds some neighborhoods, the danger becomes real for locals. Some prefer to leave immediately. I’m worried for my family and we’re scared that with the wind it will come closer. Others still under shock prefer to wait until the very last minute. Personally, I won’t sleep. I won’t sleep. I try to save as many things as possible. If they evacuate us, I leave. then I won’t have the choice. For the past two hours, we’ve been really, really worried because it’s our heritage that is burning to the ground. Many locals have decided to spend the night at the city hall where they’ll have access to camping beds and a first aid station.

A forest fire blazed in southern France Tuesday, after it crept across an area the size of 2,000 rugby pitches of trees, causing an autoroute to Spain to close temporarily and residents to evacuate their homes. The fire, the latest of several in the area in recent days, started on the property of a winery south of the city of Narbonne on Monday afternoon, then spread rapidly due to wind and parched vegetation after a heatwave.
