Northern Ireland Water (facebook) is asking people to be mindful of their water usage this weekend, given the heatwave leading to increased demand.

Some suggestions include:

Taking shorter showers

Turn off the tap while brushing teeth

Water plants early or late in the day with a watering can (rather than a hose)

Reuse water where you can—like leftover water from washing veggies for your garden

Put off washing the car until the weather cools a bit

As per previous updates from NI Water: if demand increases above the amount that can be produced, and eats into storage, it could lead to interruptions to supply.

Lough Neagh, other lakes and reservoirs might have a good amount of water in them NI Water only has a certain daily treatment capacity

  1. Megathread?

After all, the amount of water that the Fire Brigade had to use to cool houses last night.

    Before they were being attacked.

  2. It was pushing down a week ago. This is the first hot period since may

  3. There was a discussion on LBC about this in the context of hose pipe bans in England.

A good point was made that almost every residence across the UK (and Ireland) could relatively inexpensively collect and store rainwater for use in circumstances where treated water isn’t needed through the use of water butts. The Range currently have them for about £30, I’ll likely be fitting at least one in the near future.

It won’t solve the issues now, but it may be something that people could do for the future to have an impact.

  4. Washing car in this heat is a dumb idea to begin with.

  5. Plenty of water to save loyalist housing, but the rest of us are asked to be mindful. This sounds awful familiar..

  6. Also stop throwing wetwipes and all the other non shite shite down the loo.

  7. Blaming the working class for pollution and waste while the owners of these companies take private jets around the world and waste hundreds of gallons with their 24/7 water sprinklers to keep their rare garden grass nice and hydrated and their private pools filled.
