Hi,

Does anyone know if there’s a ranking list of schools in Oost-Vlanderen? I know we can get the [list of schools](https://data-onderwijs.vlaanderen.be/onderwijsaanbod), and there’s also [Onderwijsinspectie](https://www.onderwijsinspectie.be/nl), but is there a list you can filter school type (teaching method), and some sort of academic results/teaching quality?

Looking ideally around Melle.

Thanks!

  1. As a teacher in the region of Melle, I can give you an important tip:
    – Pick a school that’s not too far away, as comuting sucks for working people, but it sucks for kids too.
    – Our educational system allows for differentiated cultures at schools. This is a strength, as not every kid functions best in traditional more hierarchical schools. There are schools that are more relaxed with open communication between teacher and student. There are non-standard schools that focus on project learning, … You have many options. It’s not about attending at the best school but at the best fitting school for your kid.

There’s gonna be open school days soon, so go there to get a feel of the culture instead of looking at lists.

  2. Ha, good one. Unfortunately, the GO! in particular is very vocal that they don’t want anything to do with transparent results whatsoever:

That doesn’t mean there aren’t any good schools. They just don’t want you to compare, because then they’d have to actually try their best to keep students. So just remember those words when they claim to be “committed to the highest educational standards”, because they’re frankly talking shit when they say that.

  3. Short answer: if you don’t know anyone behind the scenes, no. The best you can do is make a guess.

Long answer: A report from the inspection mostly tells an embellished story as these things are announced way in advance and thus planned for. Fuck, some schools just make shit up and pass it that way. It’s really easy to lie your way through it, no biggie. Honestly, if that report is orange/red,, stay the fuck away.

Small sidenote: if the part that is shit is the infrastructure, this might aswell have been fixed already. These things do get fixed pretty fast, the other stuff not so much. If those cases it’s worth a visit just to double check.

So what should you do? You can just go by reputation and feel (and you know, doublecheck to make sure it’s not a shit school), it is what most people do.

If you want to know a bit more, try to find out whether or not a lot of teachers (and students) are leaving throughout the years (turnover rates), that’s usually not a good sign. Reputation on the street while inflated, is usually grounded in some version of the truth.

Most schools are traditional ones, others usually advertise it (Dalton, Freinet, leefschool, …). My advice would be stay away from those. Are you looking for primary or secondary schools? Cause if you’re looking at the latter, it gets a lot more difficult (vervolgrichtingen zijn belangrijk).
