  1. This accord between the 2 political groups on the islands has a few end result.

    * The creation of a “state of New Caledonia” and a new nationality. This state will be able to be recognized on the international stage.
    * Keeping New Caledonia within France
    * No more referendums for independence and recognizing their previous results
    * Increasing the voting pool of people that can vote in local elections
    * increasing the power to NC’s subdivisions (the 3 provinces)
    * Keeping regalia powers to France, while they will be able to be transferred to NC if 3/5 of the Congress is in favour.
    * And a few more things

Basically, NC will not be independent, will not be a state in free association (like Niue), but will be more like Greenland.

  2. Having been to New Caledonia on vacation, it is hard to side with one side so I hope this compromise works. There’s definitely huge socioeconomic disparities between natives and foreign-born citizens, and you can see the segregation in the society. But if New Caledonia gained full independence it would crash the economy, especially in the outlying Islands thst aren’t as developed or prosperous

  3. Hopefully this leads to lasting peace and development on the islands

Unsure what it means when it says “other countries can recognize such a state”

Does this mean that New Caledonia will be allowed to do independent diplomacy?
