“In one case, a landlord in Lucan, Co Dublin, was fined €500 for failing to implement the rent caps in the RPZ as well as failing to offer the tenancy back to the tenant.”
€500 fine? That’s no disincentive.
The RTB do a reasonably decent job, but it feels as if there are simply too many cases and the fines seem miniscule.
Nine cases with fines totalling less than 10k. Cost of doing business. No wonder these folks do what they like.
thats like half a months rent? rinse, repeat, pay 500 quid next year…
I’m glad some actual enforcement has started. That in itself is unusual in Ireland, but it needs a lot more funding and fines need to be more substantial.
I think all rented properties should be licensed, and inspected each year to ensure they meet the minimum standards.
Name and shame.
It’d be great if there was a database of all rented accommodation and what the current and historical rent was. New renters could then see what the previous rent was and how often and by how much the landlord raises rent. You could also view what other properties in the neighborhood were being rented for.
It’s way more than nine but people don’t report it because of the chances of getting fucked out
Only 9?
The fine should be 2% of gross earnings in rent that year on the property in question. Nothing less and this turns form a deterrent to a speeding ticket, IE you can break the law if you pay up.
A 500 fine? That ought to teach him a lesson! /s
Just recall yesterdays headline. 30% of landlords were in breach of rental limits. 0 Enforcement.
These are probably the most egregious examples.
this is good but they should really be executed on public
Ah the RTB. Toothless really and speaks volumes they’re in Clonakilty.
In addition powerless to do anything about incompetent landlords who rent out properties under false pretenses.
And dispute resolution can take months which takes away the whole point
As usual, the article hasn’t linked to the actual list of offenders which have been published on the RTB’s website.
