I hazard a guess most people on the “reform” side of this debate are already Labour or left wing voters. Wouldn’t this be an vote loser?
About as much chance of that happening as I have of becoming pope. Keir is dead set against it. Even caused trouble with khan over it.
If it’s talking about cannabis legalisation I think the tide may be turning on this one, with the US and now Germany making steps towards legalisation… would be nice for labour to support it although I know Keir is against it
seems like a no-brainer to me… would bring in a decent amount of tax revenue, make it easier for people who need it medically to access it (and help research efforts to investigate further therapeutic benefits), plus make it safer for people to use recreationally by regulating the market
downsides are fairly minimal, it’s de facto legal already (easy to obtain with minimal risk of prosecution) and other issues can be managed with additional guidance (age restrictions; personally I’d say 25 but 21 is more plausible, safe usage guidelines like alcohol units and maybe some laws about where it can be smoked/vaped as not everyone likes the smell ><)
sure old voters may be against it but frankly, fuck em, would be nice to see policies that younger people tend to endorse for a change! If labour tries to please every voter demographic on every issue they’ll end up diluting their policies to the point of uselessness; a recipe for disillusionment and disengagememt
I find it just so insane we have this drug that almost everyone takes, costs the nhs millions, and is perfectly legal (hello alcohol), yet relatively beneficial drugs (psychedelics) are illegal.
Why?
It’s not a logical reason.
No.
Labour must say whatever will get it elected.
And once it is elected, legalise weed and a few other things.
The time for controversial position taking but not being able to act, is never.
