The Issue

I am currently living without electricity due to decades of overbilling and systemic failures by NV Energy. Over 80,000 accounts were misclassified, causing customers to pay inflated rates totaling over $17 million. Many, like me, remain without access to reliable power—with no other provider to turn to.

In my case, NV Energy is refusing to restore service unless I pay $8,883.40 owed by the previous occupant—a debt that is not mine. This leaves the prior resident free from responsibility while I’m forced into financial hardship and energy insecurity. I have been without power from November 29, 2023, till present, leaving my 28-year-old disabled nephew, who is paralyzed and has no use of his legs and my 25-year-old son in the dark, they were forced to find adequate place to live in the middle of a cold winter season. My husband and I stayed back to protect our home from squatters, till we were kicked out by the City of Las Vegas. Now I am on the verge of losing my newly acquired home, because I have to pay rent else ware and cannot afford rent plus mortgage or the $8,883.40 dolor bill NV Energy has bestowed on us.

This shocking demand isn't just unethical; it feels punitive and showcases the dangers of monopolistic control. Like me, many other families in our community are trapped, forced to shoulder debts they did not incur, often pushing them into financial distress. This practice is fundamentally unfair and demonstrates a critical problem with the utility monopoly in its current state – a lack of choice and accountability, which burdens the residents who rely on these essential services.

This is more than poor billing. It’s predatory policy. Monopolistic control without competition means customers have no alternatives and no leverage—and when things go wrong, we’re the ones left in the dark.

Energy is a basic need—not a bargaining chip. Sign to demand transparency, fairness, and energy justice across Nevada.

This is a crisis of accountability:

  • NV Energy overcharged residents for decades, with more than $17 million in excess billing between 2017 and 2024 alone.
  • Refunds were capped using a 1980 rule that doesn’t apply to most victims.
  • Thousands are being left without power, unfairly held responsible for others’ debts, and denied energy access with no alternatives.

We call on state and federal leaders to:

  1. Provide emergency energy relief for residents without power.
  2. Enforce full refunds with interest for all affected NV Energy customers.
  3. Support Assembly Bill 452 and strengthen legislation around rate misclassification and consumer restitution.
  4. Break up utility monopolies and allow Nevadans to choose their electricity providers.
  5. Launch federal investigation into NV Energy’s billing practices and account assignment policies.

Our petition calls for urgent actions:

  • First, to halt NV Energy’s unfair billing practices and protect Nevadans from unfairly inherited debts.
  • Second, to enable consumer choice in electricity providers to foster competition that ensures fair pricing and services. We need a regulatory framework that offers transparency and fairness, keeping utility companies accountable to their consumers.
  • By signing this petition, you demand fairness and support the call for legislative and regulatory changes that allow better choices and protections for all Nevadans. Together, we can challenge these monopolistic practices and advocate for a fairer, more competitive energy market in Nevada.

Nevadans deserve energy justice—not inflated bills, unearned debt, and zero choice. Please sign this petition to make our voices heard and demand the changes we all deserve.
