The Danish government is planning to tighten laws on the creation and distribution of manipulated “deepfake” images that use artificial intelligence. The changes to copyright law aim to ensure that every person has full control over their body, features and voice, according to a report by The Guardian.

Denmark aims to be among the first countries in Europe to legally protect individuals’ digital identities from artificial imitations. Following an agreement between political forces, the Ministry of Culture will publish a draft for consultation before the summer holidays, with a view to approval in the autumn.

Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt emphasized that this law aims to send a strong message: every individual has the right to their body, voice and features, which are not sufficiently protected by existing laws on artificial intelligence.

This initiative enjoys the support of around 90% of MPs and comes at a time when AI technology is evolving rapidly, making the creation of fake visual and audio content easier than ever.
