France sees sharp decline in desire for children • FRANCE 24 English

On the main street of the southern city of Tulus, few strollers can be seen. Is this a glimpse into France’s future? In a country with an already declining birth rate, a new study by the French Institute for Demographic Studies shows the desire to have children has fallen sharply in the past 20 years. It states the number of French people saying they don’t want children has doubled since 2005. And it’s not just a lack of desire. Even among those who want to start a family, plans are shrinking with the average falling from 2.5 children in 2005 to 1.9 last year. The institute says people pointed to things like climate change, political turmoil, and economic instability, all making them think twice about having kids. The decline that we’ve seen over the last 20 years is present in all social groups. among the most highly educated, the least highly educated, those with the highest incomes, the lowest incomes, people born in France or born abroad. Talking to women on the streets of Tulus, it was clear the feeling resonated. I’m part of a generation where we having fewer and fewer children early on compared to a parent generation. You can really see that they started parenthood much earlier and we’re a lot further removed from it. I think it’s because we’re focused on our careers with taxes going up and everything. There’s all the bills and everything. So, it’s already a bit complicated for us. Frankly, it’s not something I want to do at all. I don’t want to put children in this world. Researchers say this fertility decline looks set to continue. Although the total fertility rate in France is likely to remain above the current European average of 1.4 children per woman.

In the past twenty years, the desire to have children has clearly declined, suggesting a continued drop in fertility rates in the future, according to a study by INED published on Wednesday

  1. It's over the world… Because the world is a mess. Home is not home anymore and anytime you'd better be ready to RUN. With kids it's harder.
    P.S. Russia

  2. Governments are starting to ban DNA testing of children, so fathers will not legally be able to find out if the child is theirs. And they wonder why men are avoiding women.

  3. The population seems demoralised france24, i "wonder" why … Do you also wonder why? No of course you dont , youre just a public/state sector media sucking everything dry.

  4. Theres ENOUGH humans on earth. We are not going exstinct because some woman choose to not have children. Lets move in from this topic!

  5. Maybe if the ruling class wasn’t so predatorily trying to make everyone poorer and life worse

People would be more open to having kids

But I think the elite are still following those Georgia guide stones, why they were blown up. They’re just acting like they want us to have kids because they know we will do the opposite out of revulsion to them

  6. Not all that live in France. Some have a mission. And you cannot ask someone having kids in a broken state that do nothing against those who broke it

  7. Children are the future. No children, no future. Decadence has set it in. New generations are born with expectations of being cuddled from cradle to grave. No agency. The system only works as a pyramid scheme and the foundations are getting weaker and weaker and it will soon crumble.

  8. If men complain when they have to provide the kids after divorce, then how else we the women must react?
I really think if women realize we all so expensive, why our kids will be cheap?

  9. The world is going through a cost of living crisis where only those sitting on a plush cushion can support having a family. Good luck filling positions in lower wage labor positions if only wealthy couples have children.

  10. France has some of the most generous childcare benefits in the world, but I can see why men think they might be getting the short end of the stick here with paternity tests being banned, and the culture being known for infidelity lol.

  11. Bye France. In 10 years 60 percent of children born in France will be born to islamic immigrants who do not uphold any French values.
I look forward to the French woman having to wear full body covers and losing their right to education and all the freedoms they have helped destroy for their descendants (if they have any) in the next 30 or so years.

  12. The system has increasingly become anti children and anti family unit. People are more happy living selfish lives and perhaps having a dog or cat instead of spending time and making sacrifices to raise children. Whilst there are also economic and political issues at play, lots of people who I know see children as a inconvenience to their lifestyle.

  13. Climate change…I thought green energy would solve that problem. People are so concerned about their careers. For 99% of us, if we quit our jobs, the company will replace us within a couple weeks and no one would miss us.
