On Monday 14 July 2025, Finland and the Philippines celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations, first established in 1955 — the same year Finland joined the United Nations.
In an opinion piece published in The Philippine Star, Finnish Ambassador Saija Nurminen emphasized the importance of multilateralism and a rules-based international order. She noted that both countries, as smaller states, benefit from strong global institutions like the UN and share a commitment to upholding international law.
Ambassador Nurminen also highlighted current global challenges, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, supply chain disruptions, and democratic fragility, stating:
“It is ever-more important to work to strengthen the rules that built the peace.”
The ambassador reaffirmed Finland’s support for UN reform and shared responsibility in tackling global issues such as climate change, migration, and technological disruption. She underscored the countries’ joint commitment, reflected in their candidacies for future non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council.
“History has taught Finland that a vibrant rules-based multilateralism offers the best model for our interconnected world,” she wrote.
“With 70 years of cooperation behind us, we know that with the Philippines we have a likeminded partner in this endeavor.”
