French poverty rate hits 30-year high • FRANCE 24 English

It’s a grim milestone for France. A staggering 9.8 million people live below the monetary poverty threshold. That’s 15.4% of the population, according to IN’s latest report on the country’s standard of living. The income poverty threshold in France is fixed at €1,288 per person per month. That’s 60% of the median income. Latest data shows that in just one year, 650,000 people have fallen into poverty. And among those living in poverty in 2023, half have a standard of living lower than 1,041 per month, or 19.2% below the poverty threshold. France’s National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies points at inflation and a decrease in government aid as the possible cause. This increase can be explained by the end of exceptional assistance, notably the inflation allowance and the exceptional back to school bonus which had been introduced in 2022 to support purchasing power. The other explanation is an increase in the proportion of micro entrepreneurs with low incomes among non-salaried workers. The Foundation for Housing the Disadvantaged in France also noted that electricity and gas cuts for unpaid bills were skyrocketing with the number of people claiming to be cold in their homes almost doubling and rental evictions numbers on a rise. We’re seeing a very worrying trend in political action or rather political inaction. It’s no longer time for one of measures. We need structural measures. NOS’s are sounding the alarm on France’s record poverty rate, pressing the prime minister for action. The latter has pledged a bold 10-year plan to slash poverty rates.

The poverty rate in France has hit a record high, with close to 10 million people living below the monetary poverty threshold in 2023, according to new figures from the French statistics bureau INSEE. The rate is the highest since INSEE began its poverty indicator report in 1996.

  1. i thought poverty rates go down when you let poor people into your country with no demand for their labor 🌈

  2. I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

  3. France, just like all European countries, peaked about 30 years ago. Now you have a worse economy, more crime, and less social cohesion. The neo-liberal order has failed on every level.

  4. In the meantime the Emperor of The French and his Imperial Consort gets wined and dined at Buckingham Palace.
There was more justice in France before 1789.

  5. You accept the migrants and just allow them to be below poverty rates? Reason why they went the is to have better life in the first place

  6. France: Imports the entire third world. Also France: Becomes a terrible place to live. Somehow, also France: Why is everyone poor and the crime rate so high?

  7. There is no poverty in Western Europe. Everything is free. There is no hungry no homeless no sick no war no strife no worries.

  8. Obviously the solution is to import more Africans and raise taxes on French people to give to those Africans. Then give more tax breaks to megacorps all while raiding the offices of the French governments political opposition
