Two pubs a week are now closing in Ireland

  1. Honestly surprised its not more with the price of pub drinks

As I always say 2 options

1 buy 8 cans of anything for less than 25 euro

2 buy 8 pints of anything for over 42 Euro

    Choice is yours

  2. Pubs are are a cultural landmark and the cornerstone of communities to the point they must be subsidised by the government, but don’t you dare ask for any other entertainment options like cannabis cafes or later opening hours for nightclubs, they’ll destroy society.

  3. It’s really hard to feel sorry for any publican though… Price rise after price rise and now they’ve priced themselves out of the market

  4. I always find it funny they think changing VAT or anything will help. It needs to be changed for consumers. But yet they petitioned minimum alcohol unit pricing still not understanding that
People’s have wised up to drinking and are doing it less as its absurdly priced and unhealthy

  5. Pricing themselves out of a market unfortunately and the breweries aren’t helping either.

  6. Good. Legalised drug dealers, ruining families for generations.

  7. People are citing cost but it’s not all that. The price of the pint was proportionally more expensive to income at points in the past to today.

A large part is People are different in 2025 to 1995.

Go back 30 years ago and the reality was that lots of towns and villages in Ireland had lots of pubs. Drink was expensive but people still made their choice to give their money to them. People don’t make that decision nowadays. I’ve read stuff like “i can’t afford my rent and going out”. People couldn’t really afford it back then either and yet did it. Similarly, many pubs saw family men, often with kids at home, give their entire day and money to the pub.

People have different interests, hobbies that means not spending their entire day in some dark pub.

Add to that drink drinking laws, and those rural pubs that decided not to serve food became dinosaurs.

  8. Paddies not drinking like they used to. Sad to see. We used to be up there with the best in the world

  9. You can’t get home out of a pub in rural Ireland now, taxis are all gone.

It’s a pity taxis are so heavily regulated, something like Uber would be great in rural Ireland, running a taxi during the week isn’t viable there.

  10. Part of me wonders if it’s oversupply, there are just a lot of pubs but people seem to be drinking less.

They should do something to try ensure that towns don’t lose all their pubs, they are a cornerstone of the community, in some cases one of the few pieces now that the church is on the decline. It’s as much about the company as it is the drink.

Not saying the publicans are not to blame for some pubs going out of business and that alcohol is good, just that for some it’s one of their few social outlets and it’d be a same for small towns to lose all their pubs.

  11. The percentage of peoples income going on rent which has risen hugely over the last decade meaning they have little disposable income to socialise meaning less people in pubs, it’s making landlords rich but they socialise in fancy hotels or abroad

  12. I’m low key delighted. Yes we’re seeing a death of an era but we’re seeing society change, hopefully for the better
I don’t drink, it’s terrible. There’s nothing about it that makes me want to have any at all. I have been able to afford things when I was a bit younger than most wouldn’t until late 20s or maybe 30s.

We should pivot to something though. I don’t know what will take up the slack that pubs had

  13. A lot of older or middle aged people that have a few pound to socialise have stopped going to pubs as many pubs have been hijacked particularly in rural areas by cocaine dealers who intimidate older folk who don’t feel safe anymore in the local pub

  14. Society changes over time, we have to accept that. Pubs, churches, dance halls, etc are closing, but gyms, cafes and children’s activities are on the rise. We shouldn’t fight it, we should accept it.

Similarly, alcohol is the cause of many problems in our society. It’s clearly bad for our health, and the cause of obesity in many men of a certain age. It’s also bad for our society: how many households have been ruined by alcoholism, how many fights, how many falls. It’s a good thing that people are drinking less.

The one thing I’d like to see is a plan for the re-use of closed pubs and churches. We have a huge shortage of childcare right now – could those old churches and pubs be fitted out as crèches / preschools? Could they be repurposed as community facilities to provide indoor activities for children, elderly people and adults?

  15. Deregulate taxi drivings allow Uber and don’t make pub licences so hard to obtain.

  16. There was a large pub in a nearby town it closed years back and the space has now become part of a gym. Even though the population is growing. Ireland is changing and I do think we are going to need places to socialise and do stuff. Pubs are not the answer to that anymore.

  17. Just such a waste of money. I drink g&t and in some places it’s 13euro. I’ll only go to the pub if I have to. Wedding, birthday etc. Tap Tap taping the card then waking up 150 quid down with a banging head ache. The next day is a right off, wasted. Too old for that shit. Would rather smoke a doobie.

  18. 30 years of poor housing policy and brain drain now means that half the people aged 25 to 50 now live far from our family and friends.

No need to visit pubs to chat to strangers.

  19. If rural pubs started investing in a barista coffee machine they might be able to stop the decline. People walking, cycling or even driving past might stop in during the day. It’s just the way things are going now.

  20. ‘Promoted social disconnection’ whatever that means. I know plenty of people that meet regularly and socialise at a coffee shop and there’s plenty of them about.

  21. They brought in the 10pm law to prop up the pubs and it utterly failed. The vintners association all utter ball bags. The longest running marriage in Ireland is between them and politicians

  22. Friends are pub owners. The under 25’s are drinking way less than the over 25’s were at the same age.

People are more health conscious and more reluctant to waste money on drink.

I was talking to my friends 16 year old son, at that age I loved drinking with my friends, they have zero interest in discos or drinking. It’s all gym
