The Italian Democratic Party (the second largest Italian party) is pushing for a European Confederation

  1. Why not this would be good for central and south europe but idk are north and east Europe agreeing to this.

  2. Fantastic! I think it’s important also to reiterate for more nationalistically minded Europeans – a EU federation or confederation would not mean the destruction of our nations and what we associate with them (culture, language). It would simply mean a unified EU wide framework for effective taxation and payment redistribution. Think cohesion policies but actually all encompassing. And, in fact, seeing how the EU operates, it would probably mean even stronger support for the small nations and their cultures, as we craft a unified European cultural framework that we show and give to the world.

We do not benefit from EU level competition on a national level. The Baltics are a prime example of how competition, rather than cooperation, leads to unequal and shitty outcomes. We need to cooperate if we are to survive and prosper in a new world.

  3. According to the polls PD is around 21 percent while directly Euro-sceptic parties around 50-55 percent(Lega,Fratelli, they got softened but 5 estrella,Italexit) I bet there also many people who doesnt support this idea inside PD. So this is hardly a news to have an actual impact but marginal views of a politician.

  4. I don’t think enough redittors understand that pushing for a European Confederation is more divisive than unifying, since there are several countries, several populations, who absolutely do not want this out of the EU. The way things are now and in the foreseeable future, it’ll make the EU unattractive for a lot of people – this is true whether you personally want a confederation or not. My own country doesn’t even want a shared currency. It’s fine and dandy to have that belief and goal, but maybe wait with The United States of Europe efforts until it’s not an alienating pipe dream and have it be the far off end goal of a sufficiently strong, competent and united EU sometime in the future.
