Two members of the union: Slovakia and Malta, oppose the approval of the 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia.
This was reported in “European Truth” with reference to sources in EU diplomatic circles.
According to an EP source, at a meeting of the EU Permanent Representatives Committee on Sunday, July 13, the discussion on the 18th package of sanctions lasted several hours.
Slovakia is still blocking sanctions against Russia because it has not received guarantees from the European Commission that it will not suffer losses after the EU completely abandons Russian gas in 2028.
Malta has also begun to speak out against the package. It opposes lowering the price ceiling for Russian oil.
“Malta, like Greece and Cyprus, are states with a large tanker fleet whose economies depend on oil transportation. That is why they did not support the idea of lowering the threshold price for Russian oil,” said one of the EP sources.
It is noted that Malta is the only EU member state that insists on refusing to lower the price ceiling for Russian oil.
It was previously reported that EU countries have made significant progress in agreeing on the 18th sanctions package against Russia . The new sanctions include a reduction in the marginal price for Russian oil.
It was previously reported that Estonia will block the 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia if the introduction of a new price ceiling for Russian oil is removed from it .
