Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has accused NATO of preparing Moldova for a potential military conflict with Russia, claiming the alliance is transforming the country into a key foothold on the eastern flank.

According to the SVR, NATO is modernizing airfields, creating logistical hubs, and adapting Moldova’s railways for the rapid deployment of NATO forces to Russia’s borders.

The SVR further warns Moldovan citizens that, in the event of a NATO-Russia conflict, they would bear the brunt and become “cannon fodder.” The agency also alleges that NATO military instructors are influencing Moldova’s armed forces to align with NATO standards, accusing President Maia Sandu’s government of catering to Western demands to maintain power.

The SVR also claims NATO is financially supporting the pro-presidential party “Action and Solidarity” ahead of Moldova’s September elections, with the potential repeal of Moldova’s neutral status if the party wins. The SVR suggests Sandu is aligning Moldova with Romania and may be willing to hand Moldova over to NATO.

In contrast, Moldova’s Prime Minister Dorin Recean stated that Russia seeks to destabilize the country, citing plans to deploy up to 10,000 troops in the breakaway region of Transnistria . He warned of Russian interference in Moldova’s elections and its influence campaigns.

The Institute for the Study of War has noted that Russia aims to turn Transnistria into a staging ground for hybrid operations against Moldova, Ukraine, and the EU, with the long-term goal of making Moldova a satellite state.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has threatened Moldova, claiming its NATO aspirations could make it “the next Ukraine” and vowed to protect Russian citizens in Transnistria from becoming victims of Western influence.

Earlier, it was reported that Russia is seeking to expand its military presence in Transnistria, with plans to increase its current force from approximately 1,500 to as many as 10,000 personnel. The move coincides with a provocative military exercise simulating a Soviet-era assault on Bucharest.
