As Milan Bergamo Airport marks 20 years of operations for Wizz Air, nations such as Poland, Romania, Albania, Bulgaria, and Serbia are seeing their connectivity dramatically increased. With 20 years of operations, the carrier has become a central link between these Central and Eastern European states and Lombardy, Italy, through an expanding portfolio of high-frequency, low-cost links. The growth in the routes offered by Wizz Air not only made traveling between these territories more accessible, but also significantly helped raise economic and tourist links, presenting travelers in Italy and Europe with cheaper and more convenient alternatives. The occasion is testament to Wizz Air’s dedication to offering smooth connections, facilitating deeper cross-border cultural and business relationships.

My Development and Success Story

Wizz Air started operations in Milan Bergamo when it made its first flight from Poland on May 19, 2004. Its initial impact was immediate, and by 2009, the carrier was the airport’s second busiest carrier. That position hasn’t changed as the carrier still ranks second after the largest operator in the airport.

By 2016, the airline had grown to 15 routes from Milan Bergamo, considerably enhancing its presence. The airline hit a record high in 2015, having transported almost a million people, registering a 15% growth compared to the previous year. By mid-2016, the airline had moved 5.1 million people, thus firmly placing itself as an integral partner in the airport’s growth.

In 2024, Wizz Air broke new ground, passing 1.5 million annual Milan Bergamo passengers. Despite the challenges created by the pandemic, the airline quickly regained momentum, passing 15 million passengers in 2025.

A Continued Expansion Into 2025

The expansion for Wizz Air doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. During the initial six months in 2025, the carrier flew about 4,000 times, transporting about 740,000 people from Milan Bergamo. With such positive momentum, Wizz Air is poised to keep on setting records in the future years.

Widening the Boundaries through Fresh Directions

Wizz Air is expanding its network further, becoming a significant link between Lombardy and Central/East Europe. The carrier currently serves Milan Bergamo to nine points in five countries, including Romania, Poland, Albania, Bulgaria, and Serbia.

Wizz Air is the leading operator on Romanian routes from Milan Bergamo, serving Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Craiova, and Timisoara. The routes contribute 39 weekly operations, supplying close to 8,000 weekly seats between Milan Bergamo and Romania. The new Suceava services, introduced from December 15, will further reinforce such connectivity.

Beyond Romania, Wizz Air connects Milan Bergamo to other major destinations, including Belgrade, Sofia, Tirana, and Warsaw, offering both business and leisure travelers low-cost, high-frequency travel options.

Focusing on 2025, Wizz Air is to introduce a number of new routes. On September 16, a two-weekly service to Varna, Bulgaria, will be introduced, followed on October 26 by a four-weekly Chisinau, Moldova, route. Suceava services will be introduced in December, further expanding the total number of cities served from Milan Bergamo to 12 by the end of the year.

Sustainability and Fleet Modernisation

Wizz Air is deeply committed to sustainability alongside its growth ambitions. The airline has been updating its fleet at Milan Bergamo with the latest-generation Airbus aircraft, including A320neo and A321neo models. These modern aircraft reduce fuel consumption, CO₂ emissions, and noise, helping Wizz Air increase its capacity while remaining environmentally responsible.

Currently, nearly half of Wizz Air’s flights at Milan Bergamo are operated with these new, fuel-efficient models. This commitment to sustainability ensures that as Wizz Air continues to expand, it does so with a focus on minimizing its environmental footprint.

Bright Future for a Robust Relationship

Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation, SACBO, said: “Wizz Air has been a valued and strategic partner of Milan Bergamo Airport for more than 20 years, and its growth story here has been nothing short of impressive. From launching its first flights in 2004 to becoming our second-largest carrier today, Wizz Air has expanded its network, opened up new markets, and played a vital role in enhancing connectivity for Lombardy and Northern Italy. The airline’s commitment to serving both established and underserved routes has not only strengthened our position but has also delivered real benefits to millions of passengers. We look forward to continuing this successful collaboration as Wizz Air enters a new phase of development at Milan Bergamo.”

Wizz Air’s expansion, fleet improvements, and investment in sustainability have made it an integral operator at Milan Bergamo. As the airport’s second largest carrier, Wizz Air’s growth and progressive mindset ensure that the carrier will continue to define the future of both the airport and the region. With a strong relationship and mutual future vision, Milan Bergamo and Wizz Air are set for ongoing prosperity in the years to come.
