Syria: PKK fighters lay down their arms marking a ‘irreversible turning point’ • FRANCE 24 English

[Music] celebrations across Kurdish areas of Syria as they contemplate the potential new era of relations with their foe Turkey. They hadn’t seen or heard from Abdullah Okalan in over 26 years until Wednesday. The jailed leader of the PPK spoke from his isolated island prison in Turkey where he’s been held since 1999. Achieving the goal of peace in a democratic society with everyone doing their part is possible through a positive integrationist perspective. The conclusion drawn from all this, the PKK has abandoned its nation state goal. And by abandoning this fundamental goal, it has also abandoned its war strategy, ending its existence. Despite his long isolation, his influence on Kurds across the region remains strong. He calls for peace and our response to this call is to demand that our people intensify their struggle and uphold the call for peace. Peace talks between the Kurdish state and the PKK have taken place before only to collapse amid new rounds of violence. But this time things are moving fast. It was only 2 months ago that the PKK made the surprise announcement that they’d disarm. And both sides continued to speak of an end to the conflict. With the guidance of the values that our martyrs lost their lives for, we are going to save Turkey from a calamity that has been going on for half a century and completely cast off the bloody shackles that were put on our country’s feet. Turkeykey’s pro Kurdish Dem Party is acting as a go-between in negotiations and have traveled to northern Iraq to witness the handover ceremony. While PKK fighters retreating to the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq, close to the Turkish border, have denounced the continuing Turkish bombardment of their positions despite the talk.

The Kurdistan Workers Party’s (PKK) disarmament on Friday marks an ‘irreversible turning point’ in the peace process with Ankara and an opportunity to build a terror-free future, a senior Turkish official said on Friday.

Last time they had supposedly laid their weapons down in 2014, they actually made a weapon stack in southeastern Turkey and when their accomplice Erdoğan made a U turn, they started killing civilians and barricading cities in that area. One cannot reason and make deals with a terrorist organization who kills doctors, teachers, engineers and many more civil servants sent to southeastern Turkey and prevents the people they are professedly aim to liberate , the Kurds, from receiving decent education, medical care etc. Committing a crime en masse doesn't excuse a crime. If it does, let the West pardon Islamic terrorists who do not use more violence than PKK.
