I’m a Turk and I’m moving to Austria in a few months, I’ve been ripping my arse off studying German, watching German-language Films, TV Shows and reading German-language novels, learning Austrian history, the Viennese dialect, the best beers that Austria offers, and why is Burgenland a shitehole. This is the thing that irks me the most whenever I hear people complaining that: office/person/burocracy/document X was not in English but in German. It is fucking Germany, learn the language in the first 6 months or GTFO. Same applies for any country in the world.
People also tend to change their communication when speaking with a child. But the yank probably won’t understand what I am trying to hint at.

Yes, actual people in an actual conversation can switch to English for them because they’re nice. Does that mean “Werner Beinhart” or the “Tagesschau” will magically switch to English when they want to watch them? Does that mean that Mark-Uwe Kling’s Känguruh series will suddenly be written in English when they open a page? No. The only advantage they have is that this also applies to Die BILD.
