Texas-based Oracle, a cloud technology company, announced its plans to invest $1B (approximately €855.4M) in the Netherlands over the next five years.
This investment will boost Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in the Netherlands by expanding AI capacity in the Oracle Cloud Amsterdam Region.
“Organisations in the Netherlands are rapidly embracing AI and new technologies,” says Wilfred Scholman, vice president and country leader for the Netherlands at Oracle.
With this investment, Oracle aims to further expand its OCI presence in the Netherlands to support organisations in key sectors, such as financial services, logistics, life sciences, and energy, in migrating all types of workloads to the cloud, modernising applications, and leveraging the latest AI innovations.
Benefits of Oracle’s Distributed Cloud
In the Netherlands, Oracle’s distributed cloud offerings provide several cloud options, including the Amsterdam Commercial Cloud Region, OCI Dedicated Region, Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer, Oracle Alloy, and multicloud services.
Oracle’s distributed cloud combines the benefits of cloud computing with added control and flexibility. Its main components are:
Public Cloud: Oracle provides large public cloud regions suitable for organisations of any size, including those with strict data sovereignty requirements in the EU. A full list of regions is available.Dedicated Cloud: Customers can run all Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) services in their own data centres through OCI Dedicated Region. Partners can sell and customise OCI services with Oracle Alloy. Oracle also manages cloud regions for the U.S., U.K., and Australian governments and offers Isolated Cloud Regions for national security.Hybrid Cloud: OCI delivers key cloud services on-premises through Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer and Compute Cloud@Customer, supporting deployments in more than 60 countries. OCI Roving Edge Infrastructure—rugged, portable, high-performance appliances in various configurations—enables customers to run remote AI inferencing at the edge.Multicloud: In this case, OCI is physically integrated across all major hyperscale cloud providers, including AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. This ensures low latency and seamless access to integrated Oracle Database services such as Oracle Database@AWS, Oracle Database@Azure, Oracle Database@Google Cloud, and Oracle HeatWave on AWS and Azure.
The Oracle EU Sovereign Cloud also helps Dutch and European customers securely manage sensitive data while complying with European regulations, allowing them to take advantage of new AI innovations and migrate to the cloud effectively.
“The Dutch government has clearly expressed its ambition to build a strong technology ecosystem, allowing for AI innovation with both economic and societal impact. The investment we’re announcing today, which includes a significant expansion of OCI’s AI infrastructure capacity, underscores our continued commitment to supporting organisations in the Netherlands, regardless of size or sector. This includes the thriving startup and SME sectors. With this step, we aim to enable innovation in data and AI and contribute to greater productivity, resilience, and sustainable growth,” adds Scholman.
