Geniune question, so don’t shoot me down for this, but I remember someone saying that Spain would never allow an independant Scotland into the EU beaucse of the situation of Catalonia. Whats the story behind this?
Of course they would. Not sure why people try to pretend this hasn’t always been the case.
Spain would veto it for starters.
Well it’s not very independent if it joins the EU. It’s giving up one sugar daddy for a sugar mommy.
I misread that as Eurovisions.
Everyone should run away from England as fast as possible.
In other news: the United Kingdom welcomes Scotland as part of the UK.
Just as we voted for.
“No but in the event that it WAS independent, ignoring the settled will of the Scottish people, imagine if Scotland WAS independent, free from the clutches of the Jackboot England, if it WAS independent- would you welcome them back into the EU-
Yes or No?”
What planet do you crackpots live in
For prospective EU members, the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) generally requires a government debt-to-GDP ratio below 60%. This ratio is a key indicator of a country’s fiscal health and its ability to manage its debt burden. While the 60% threshold is a benchmark, the EU also considers the trend of the debt ratio, with a decline towards this level being a positive sign.

I’m not surprised, we seem to have quite a good rep around the world.
Watch out, all the bootlickers are going to come running and start going on about how this would be a bad thing.
The population doesn’t decide who joins the EU.
The Commission does.
And it requires that a nation satisfies the accession criteria. For Scotland that would mean acute austerity.
Compliance with EU rules means a deficit of no more than 3% gdp or a plan to quickly reach that target.
Looking at previous members who joined with high deficits, they all had a less than 6% deficit and planned phased cuts to reach 3% within 5 years.
For Scotland, which has a public spending deficit of approx 11% GDP that means cuts of 10billion before joining and a further 6 billion in the term after.
Go through GERS and try and find 16billion in cuts. It is brutal. And that isn’t factoring in the extra costs of establishing a new state.
So for now it’s a non starter- the public won’t tolerate billions in cuts and the commission won’t compromise.
The Europeans, a great bunch of lads.
Incoming but what about the Spanish!??? yoonposting.
Oh, this again. Cool.
I have no doubt, but you first have to win Independence.
This shouldn’t be at all surprising. The bigger potential issue would be with European politicians (and I’m not referring to a hypothetical Spanish veto, I’m referring to the issues with currency, debt, spending and with the main Scottish political parties).
So they can dump all the illegals on our doorstep.
That’s never been the question.
The question has always been over the fact that the vast majority of Scotlands trade is with the UK and a pivot to EU markets to replace that would be at least a decade & Scotland would take a huge economic hit in the mean time.
There would be an issue over the common travel area and freedom of movement as Scotland adopting that would result in a hard border with England.
It’s never been about Scotland being welcome in the EU and has always been about the Yes campaign refusing to answer the difficult questions that rejoining without the rest of the UK would pose.
Never forget that the “Better Together” camp lied when they claimed that remaining in the UK would secure Scotland’s place in the EU, only to then vote us out against our will.
