  8. Surprised that Germany isn’t much lower on the list, don’t know anyone who was an AC. Hope there will be laws in the future that will allow people who rent to install an AC no matter what the landlord says. Portable ACs are better than nothing but rather impractical. I live on the ground floor and my bedroom window faces the sidewalk, I really don’t wanna keep my window open at night to run the hose through it.

  9. Not that surprising really, since even in Poland the AC I installed last year is literally saving my life. Heatwaves can get unbearable – that bloody Sun is attacking my flat all day long, wakes me up in the morning and then, around midday, proceeds to turn my living room into an oven; fun all day long from both sides – so it was a very good investment.

  11. Considering that it is at least 30 degrees in northern Italy from April to October, it is a necessary investment. I have a fully air-conditioned house plus fans. Otherwise it is impossible

  12. Literally the most meaningless data I’ve seen today. It’s literally absolute numbers. Of course the largest southern European country consumes more AC.

  13. Absolutely. It’s crucial to have AC. Life is miserable without it half the year. But the thing about AC is that it’s also pretty decent in the winter. If temps are not subzero you can keep a house warm with the same AC that cools it down in the winter, and often for less money than you’d pay for oil or gas to heat up the house with radiators. So the range of temperatures that an AC is useful in is actually pretty big.

  20. Growing up in Romania, my first ever job was installing AC in the 2000. Now I live in Switzerland and I’m very surprised it’s almost inexistent

  27. It’s the combination of climate change and aging real estate. Despite everything, Italy has inefficient homes mainly, and all workplaces have AC running 24/7. I work in a public place myself, and we all have the air conditioning on full blast. If it’s too cold, we mostly open the windows. However, about 50% of homes have air conditioning, so don’t assume that it’s something that all homes have.This consumption also depends largely on indiscriminate use, not strictly domestic, and the inefficiency of a large part of homes.

    I’m an airbnb host (in Sardinia) and guess how much disappointed my lasts guest’s (from northern europe) were when they found out my AC’s were out of order because of condensation leaking?

  29. Was talking to some Brits the other day. They told me that it was so hot in their home and complained about the 26C. I was kinda shocked as 26C is the norm when I turn on my AC in Athens while without it my living room gets to 35C.
